The “don't mention the EU” - EU Election

Comments

I remember hearing too much of the word change, in Blair’s 1997 campaign. Ever since then, I have been suspicious of it. It’s usually a party’s way of saying, ‘Nothing will change, but you’ll have some new faces to ridicule.’
Your memory is better than mine (not difficult). At least T Blair kept his word. These spring instantly to mind. He changed:

- Parliament into a hollow shell devoid of much of its power
- Cabinet into a toothless body replaced with Tony's inner sofa style of government by close hand picked, non-elected, advisors
- Sovereignty into some cardboard cut out pretence of sovereignty by transferring power (or competencies) en masse to the EU Commission.

That's change no one should be proud of

The EU is a government of bureaucrats, by bureaucrats for bureaucrats. Monnet's dream, stemming from the 1920s, was for a supranational government of the future, run by technocrats without all the constraints of democracy and nationalism. Monnet introduced initiatives little bit by little bit until they became a fait acomplis, so slowly, the supranational EU government has taken almost all power from national governments, but few seem to either notice or care.
